Heart shapes in everyday life

Hearts are hidden everywhere: in stones and leaves, in clouds and coffee, on pavements and walls. Here are the places where our community finds them most often, with photos and tips so you can start looking yourself.

Our gallery holds more than 150 photos of heart shapes from everyday life. Most of them were not planned. Someone was walking the dog, cooking dinner or waiting for a train, looked down and saw a heart. Sorted by where they were found, the photos show that love really does turn up everywhere, if we give it a second look.

Why does this work so well? Our brain is constantly looking for familiar shapes, and the heart is one of the most familiar shapes there is. Scientists call the effect pareidolia. You can read more about it in our guide why we see hearts everywhere.

How to start looking

Pick one place you pass every day, such as your street, your kitchen or your route to work, and look at it with fresh eyes for a week. Look down at pavements and paths, look up at clouds and leaves, and look closely at food, stains and shadows. Once you have found your first heart, chances are you will start seeing more, because your attention is now tuned to the shape.

When you find one, take a photo and send it to us. With a short note about where you found it, your heart can inspire someone else to look up.
